All Joy Reminds
“All joy reminds. It is never a possession, always a desire for something longer ago or further away or still about to be.” - C.S. Lewis
I played a sport in college and athletics is a love of mine, but it’s not something I thought would ever interest my daughter, Alivia. In fact, I gave up on that dream when I lost my son years ago. Yet, here we are. Going outside on spring afternoons before it gets dark, tossing the ball around and talking about our day and the drama of 4th grade between pops of the glove.
The author, C.S. Lewis described moments like this as being “surprised by joy.” This surprising joy reminds me of a life gone by, of a desire I had as a father and of what I look forward to every day. But, I realize the joy is not in the activity, it is in the person I get to do it with. For that I am most thankful.
